Smile4Kime

Smile4Kime is an autoethnographic experimental documentary film by Elena Guzman that explores friendship, grief, and spiritual practice. The animated portions of the film bring to life dream sequences, spiritual altars, and serve as portals that connect past, present, and future.

I and a small team of animators worked with Guzman for several years to bring these animations to life. It was a deeply collaborative process and many iterations were designed, storyboarded, and animated before we felt the artwork fully reflected the tone and depth that the story deserved.

Behind the Stage Door

In 2022, I collaborated with Mural Arts Philadelphia and the Philadelphia Ballet to produce 4 animations for Behind the Stage Door, “an interactive multimedia performance that explores the ‘invisible’ forces that bring the ballet to life.” The animations illustrate the stories of 4 ballet workers – a dancer, a choreographer, a costumer, and the props master.

I found their narratives at times funny, and at times extremely moving and bittersweet. It was an engaging challenge as an animator to come up with visual narratives that could flow through these tonal changes, and have each animation be unique to each narrative while supporting the project as a whole.
